What is Dengue Fever?

  • Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV) and transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.
  • Common in tropical and subtropical regions.
  • About 100–400 million infections occur yearly worldwide.
  • Many infections are mild, but some progress to severe dengue.
  • Also known as “break-bone fever” due to severe body pain.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

  • High fever (up to 40°C / 104°F)
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle, bone, and joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting

Diagnosis of Dengue Fever

  • Viral detection tests (PCR/antigen)
  • Antibody tests
  • Platelet count monitoring
