What is Yellow Nail Syndrome?

  • Yellow Nail Syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder affecting nails, respiratory system, and lymphatic system.
  • Characterized by a triad of symptoms:
    • Yellow, thickened nails
    • Lymphedema (swelling)
    • Respiratory involvement
  • Most commonly seen in adults over 50 years.
  • Strongly linked to:
    • Lymphatic dysfunction (poor drainage)
    • Fluid accumulation in tissues

Diagnosis of Yellow Nail Syndrome

  • Supporting tests:
    • Chest imaging (for lung involvement)
    • Lymphatic studies

Clinical Features of Yellow Nail Syndrome

  • Nail Changes
    • Yellow or greenish discoloration
    • Thickened, curved nails
    • Slow or absent nail growth
    • Nail separation (onycholysis)
  • Lymphedema
    • Swelling due to fluid accumulation
    • Commonly affects: Lower limbs (legs, ankles)
    • Occurs in 30–80% of patients
  • Respiratory Manifestations
    • Chronic cough
    • Pleural effusion (fluid around lungs)
    • Recurrent infections: Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Pneumonia
