What is Yellow Nail Syndrome?
- Yellow Nail Syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder affecting nails, respiratory system, and lymphatic system.
- Characterized by a triad of symptoms:
- Yellow, thickened nails
- Lymphedema (swelling)
- Respiratory involvement
- Most commonly seen in adults over 50 years.
- Strongly linked to:
- Lymphatic dysfunction (poor drainage)
- Fluid accumulation in tissues
Diagnosis of Yellow Nail Syndrome

- Chest imaging (for lung involvement)
- Lymphatic studies
Clinical Features of Yellow Nail Syndrome
- Nail Changes
- Yellow or greenish discoloration
- Thickened, curved nails
- Slow or absent nail growth
- Nail separation (onycholysis)
- Lymphedema
- Swelling due to fluid accumulation
- Commonly affects: Lower limbs (legs, ankles)
- Occurs in 30–80% of patients
- Respiratory Manifestations
- Chronic cough
- Pleural effusion (fluid around lungs)
- Recurrent infections: Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Pneumonia
