What is Common Cold?
- The common cold is a viral infection of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). It is usually mild and self-limiting but highly contagious.
- Caused by viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses.
- Adults typically get 2–3 colds per year.
- Children may experience more frequent infections.

- Most people recover within 7–10 days.
How It Spreads
- Air droplets from coughing or sneezing.
- Direct contact with infected persons.
- Touching contaminated surfaces and then face (eyes, nose, mouth).
Symptoms of Common Cold
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Sore or scratchy throat
- Cough
- Mild headache or body aches
- Low-grade fever
Treatment of Common Cold
- Adequate rest
- Increased fluid intake
- Steam inhalation or humidified air
- Over-the-counter pain relievers and cold medicines
- Warm fluids and throat soothing remedies
